April 2024

The Summer Guide is Here

The Summer 2024 Guide will be arriving in mailboxes and will be available at all locations this week. The Guide is your source for the latest Library information. Inside you’ll find upcoming events and programs, service highlights, branch updates, Friends of Johnson County Library and Johnson County Library Foundation news. The Guide is published trimesterly and covers forthcoming events for the next four months.

The images on the front and back covers were created by Vermont-based illustrator and animator Ron Donnelly, who created the artwork for this year’s Summer Reading theme, “Adventure Begins at Your Library”, alongside children’s author/illustrator Juana Martinez-Neal. See page 12 for more details on the exciting adventures the Library has planned to celebrate Summer Reading this year.

Did You Know: Fresh, Exciting New Designs for Library Cards

The three new designs created by local artists for our courier trucks have inspired designs for three new Library cards, debuting at the recently opened Merriam Plaza Library. The cards will be available systemwide starting June 1.

Three local artists were selected to interpret what the Library means to them and how the Library impacts the community, and then asked to translate that into art. Each artist brought their own distinctive eye-catching style to the project.

  • Sol Anzorena was born in Argentina and grew up in Spain, her visual art and murals are infused with her passion for the environment and the natural world.
  • Lauren Seider, a Kansas City Art Institute graduate, is an illustrator and designer whose work has been exhibited at the Corinth and Shawnee branches.
  • JT Daniels is a popular artist and muralist whose work can be seen throughout Kansas City, on exterior walls of downtown businesses, in galleries and adorning streetcar stops.
If you want to update your Library card with one of these stunning new designs, stop by Merriam Plaza Library. Starting June 1, these new designs will be available at all of our locations.

Save the Date: Prairie Village Community Center Campus Study Meeting #2

The Library is considering locations for a new branch to eventually replace the Corinth Library, and we want to hear your thoughts! Johnson County Library, the YMCA of Greater Kansas City and the City of Prairie Village are moving into the next phase of a multi-year study of a new Community Center Campus in Harmon Park.

The next in-person public meeting for the Prairie Village Community Center Campus Study is scheduled for Thursday, April 4, 2024. At this meeting attendees can provide feedback on conceptual designs for site options that could include a relocated library. You do not need to be a Prairie Village resident to attend this meeting.
